Trail closed on arrival
PR29 Levada do Furado is closed right now. You would find out standing at the gate, 45 minutes and one packed lunch into your morning, with no backup plan.
Permits sold out yesterday
PR1 and PR6 sell out 1 to 3 days ahead. By the time you open SIMplifica to book, every slot for your date is already gone, and the interface is not going to help you figure that out quickly.
Weather blindsided you
Sunny in Funchal at 8am. You summit Pico Ruivo at noon into a whiteout. The Weather Channel showed 19 degrees and clear. It pulled data from the coast.

Rabaçal
The most popular levada walk in Madeira, combining the dramatic Risco waterfall (100m drop) with the enchanting 25 Fontes (25 springs) lagoon. Flat levada walking through laurisilva with two spectacular destinations.

Northeast
One of Madeira's most dramatic levada walks, culminating at the magnificent Caldeirão Verde waterfall with its 100m drop into a circular green pool. Four dark tunnels (up to 200m) require a torch. Outstanding laurisilva along the way.

Central Mountains
Short, rewarding out-and-back to Pico Ruivo from Achada do Teixeira. Less demanding than PR1 but reaches the same summit at 1861m. Often above the clouds with spectacular 360° views.

East
The iconic peninsula trail at Madeira's eastern tip. Rocky paths along dramatic sea cliffs, ochre and rust-coloured geological formations, and spectacular Atlantic views. Utterly different from the lush west - like hiking on Mars. The most dramatic coastal walk on the island.

Northwest
A full-day epic descent from Pico do Areeiro summit all the way to the isolated hamlet of Achadas da Cruz on the northwest coast. 1800m of descent through every ecosystem in Madeira. One of the island's great adventure hikes.

Central Mountains
A classic traverse of the central mountain range, crossing from Encumeada pass over the high ridge to Boaventura on the north coast. Stunning views of both coasts on clear days. Requires good fitness and weather awareness.
